AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Coach & Athlete Frameworks
• Introduction to Coach & Athlete development models
• To understand the role of a junior coach within the larger framework
• To know the expectations of the role of a junior coach
Course Expectations
Outline current course content and address any expectations from
participants
Coaching Ethos & Philosophy
• Gain an understanding of why each participant wants to coach
• Appreciate why other people coach
• Introduce an initial philosophy or set of principles to coach by
Coach & Athlete Welfare
• Introduce awareness of welfare policies
• To know how to behave as a coach in a position of trust
Communication & Coaching Styles
• To know the 3 main coaching styles: Commend, Cooperative &
Submissive
• When to use what and how to address and become relatable to different
groups of athletes
Instruction & Demonstration
• To know how to effectively instruct and demonstrate using the KISS
principle
• To understand Visual, Audio & Kinaesthetic learning styles
• To be able to teach a skill in a controlled environment and then
implement it into an athlete’s performance.
Observation, Intervention & Corrections
• Introduce the concept of a coach’s eye
• Be able to identify technical mismatches
• To know why and when to intervene
• To know how to intervene – Instruction or Teachable moment
• To know what variables are able to be manipulated in an athlete’s
performance
Feedback
• To understand how feedback should be structured
• To know the difference between Direct and in-direct feedback
• To be able to implement effective feedback

Components of a Session
• To know the different components that make up a session; Brief,
warm-up, Skill Practice, Performance, Cool Down
• To understand how each of these components link up and compliment
one and other
• To understand and implement the RAMP protocol in relation to athlete
warm ups
• To be able to create appropriate warm ups for different groups of
athletes regardless of age, ability or event specific training
Health & Safety
• To be able to identify hazards within a training environment and adapt
training sessions as need be.
Setting Up for Sessions
• To understand how to set a session up and ensure options are
available for all abilities within the group.
• To have an appreciation of the area required for an exercise to run and
how this might impact other coaches
Grouping Athletes
• To introduce different methods of grouping athletes; Chronological age
Vs Bio-banding Vs Skill level/ability
• To know and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the different
methods of grouping athletes
Movements Patterns
• To be able to identify the fundamental movement patterns
• To be able to correctly instruct and deliver coaching points to develop
fundamental movement patterns
• To be able to relate fundamental movement patterns to athletics event
specific skills
Movement Skills
• To be able to identify and understand the components that make up
movement
• An Introduction to plyometrics and appropriate implementation and
progressions
• To be able to teach movement drills whilst highlighting areas where
components an athlete may excel or need improvement
• To demonstrate knowledge of how the components of movement skills
complement each other in practice
Understanding Technical Models
• To be able to identify Movement Patterns and Movement skills within
event specific technical models
• To understand the fundamental technical models and teaching points of
key athletics events: Sprinting, Endurance Running, Horizontal
Jumping, High Jump, Javelin and Shot Putt
• To be able to demonstrate and coach technical movements related to
each event
• To be able to identify key technical mismatches for each of the
specified events
Anatomy Through Stretching & Mobility
• To be able to identify major muscle groups in the body
• To understand the difference between mobility & flexibility and where
each sit within a training session
• To be able to lead athletes through a series of stretching and mobility
exercises appropriate for a specified point within training session or for
a specific immobility.
Applying Knowledge to Practice
• The coach will demonstrate a knowledge of all the above points and be
able to implement them to a satisfactory level to pass the junior
coaching course.
